This latest generation of Sony sensor has photodiodes embedded deeper into the substrate compared to previous sensors, resulting in much higher sensitivity to NIR wavelengths. The peak QE is nearly as high as that in the visible range. Absolute QE is estimated at 80%. This high NIR sensitivity makes it suitable for use with methane filters to reveal cloud structures in Jupiter and Saturn.
